The Middle East ended Ramadan on 9 April 2024 followed by Eid celebrations from 10 April and will continue for the next 3 – 4 days. The market is quiet in general due to all the public holidays.

The packing of Lemons up North has finished, however the packing of Lemons in the Eastern Cape was delayed this week due to the recent rain in the areas. The picking and packing should resume next week (week 16). The packing of the first Navel Oranges is expected to start at the end of April in the Northern areas and in week 20 (mid-May) in the Eastern Cape. The Eastern Cape started packing the first early Clementines during the week, and the packing of the first Novas is expected to start week 18 ( end of April). The fruit is peaking on smaller sizes (count 2-3).

There is still high volumes of Lemons in the market, with no significant increase in sales or price levels pre-Eid sales.

Increase in exported volumes shipped on both Apples and Pears to the Middle East compared to the same period last season. However, the overall volume packed over the last 2 weeks was less due to the public holidays in South Africa.

The market sales and demand has picked up for Pears. However, continued downward trend in sales and price levels due to the oversupply in the market.
