There was a 25% decrease in exported volumes of Lemons from South Africa to the Middle East compared to the same period last season.   The packing of Lemons and Soft Citrus from the Eastern Cape are underway and volumes will continue to increase week on week. In the Northern areas, the first pick on Lemons is finished and price levels will determine the second pick. The smaller sizing on Star Ruby’s (count 50/55) is still a challenge and the aim is to try and not oversupply markets to maintain the price at a certain level. The local juice price is at favorable level, and this might assist in not overloading the export markets with the smaller Star Ruby counts. The growers who pack Leanri variety of Mandarins are currently de-greening to start packing for the local and export market.

Market update

Dubai are re-exporting Lemons to Saudi Arabia and pushing price levels down. Limited volume available on stored Lemons from Turkey and Egypt with quality problems. The Lemons are soft and mainly being sold on auction to restaurants that are buying. The main volume of Lemons is from South Africa in the market. There is only Mandarins from Spain and Morocco in the market, however Morocco should be out the market in the next 2-3 weeks. Mandarins with leaves are still maintaining high price levels in Saudi Arabia at $16.00 – $17.30 for 7kg Cartons. Navels from Morocco is at the tail-end of the season. Spain is still in the market, but prices are too high ($14.70-$17.30) for 9kg cartons, and they will not be able to compete with the first South African Navels at lower price levels for 15kg cartons. However, the colour from Spain (full orange colour) is much nicer compared to South Africa.
