Citrus 

Citrus fruit – South Africa

Recent rains in many of the citrus regions has hampered packing and therefore volumes for week 20 and 21 will be affected.

Initial industry estimates for the 2023 South Africa citrus season indicates a decrease of 9% in Navels, however only a slight increase of 1% in Valencia volumes. Grapefruit will also be down by 14%, however Lemon volumes will be up by 8%. There is an overall increase in all varieties of soft citrus from South Africa.

In General

The soft citrus season in Morocco will end sooner than anticipated due to adverse weather conditions. The season will end in the next two weeks (end of May), while it lasted until the end of June last year.

Market update

There should be a good opportunity for South African navels in the Middle East market with Spain ending sooner than anticipated and the South African navel crop that is expected to be down by 9% this season.

Middle East – decrease of 6% on pear volumes shipped from South Africa, however apples are up by 1% compared to the same period last season, while combined shipments from Chile and South Africa are up by 1% on apples.

Volumes on RGL apples and pears are becoming less week on week.

Although the Middle East market is sluggish currently on apples and pears, the market will soon pick up due to this shortage.

Slow sales for apples from all countries in the Middle East market, due to higher consumption of other summer fruits.  Apples are being stored for longer periods until sales start picking up. The trend is the same for South African pears.

Most of the Chilean Kiwi fruit is allocated to programs, with no additional volume available.

The harvest in Chile is coming to an end and estimates still indicate a decrease of 14% in volumes this season. However, drop in volumes from New Zealand will be greater with 31% compared to last season.

India

First shipments of soft citrus are enroute and a good market is expected as the Chinese mandarins should be out of the market. Pear prices are picking up each week and apple demand is high.

Bangladesh

Apples are still selling at low prices in the market, and they predict it will only pick up in about 30days.

Demand for pears has increased.

And soft citrus pricing are coming down as volumes en-route has increased.
