Update on the GCC countries

Citrus and other commodities are facing downward pressure due to the high supply of local fruits such as stone fruits, cherries, watermelons, and melons. Apples are the only commodity maintaining price stability in the current market.

Demand for certain fruits has been significantly impacted by factors such as school holidays and a rise in vacation travel.

Citrus 

In Letsitele growers are finishing up with Midknights with the first Late Valencias starting.

Witkrans and Cambria coming to an end in Senwes, Midknight Valencias starting this week.

In the Eastern Cape Lemons are coming to an end, late Mandarins have started, Valencias are colouring up nicely.

Last week of big USA packing in the Western Cape, Late Navels and Late Mandarins have started, with Valencias looking to start in two weeks time.

Market update

The Middle East market continues to see a decline in demand for citrus fruits, primarily driven by market oversupply, a shift in consumer preference toward locally grown summer fruits, and reduced local consumption as many residents are away on vacation during school holidays.

Pome fruit – South Africa

Middle East – Apple export volumes from South Africa to the Middle East have risen by 8% compared to the same period last season. However, volumes of Royal Gala and Gala varieties are at the tail-end of the season, and it expected to wrap up at the end of July.

Market update

Apples are currently the only commodity that is stable across all varieties,  with prices holding firm and this is due to limited supply.

The pear market continues to experience downward pressure but is anticipated to gradually recover in the coming weeks, as limited volumes of controlled atmosphere (CA) fruit will be shipped weekly.

Local apples start

Local apples are about to start and thus some customers are already moving away from imported apples. This is putting pressure on imported apple pricing. Delays in shipments from SA are also causing apples to arrive later than was anticipated.

South African Royal Gala/Gala is nearing the end of the season with two more weeks of packing left. Less volume of Golden Delicious are currently being packed in South Africa, as growers are prioritizing other varieties.
