Citrus

Citrus fruit – South Africa

The strict EU’s plant health rules can reduce South Africa’s orange citrus volumes by 20% this year to the EU.

All growers are prioritizing Valencia/Midknight packing in blackspot free orchards that can go to Europe to fulfill programs, as they are falling behind on orders. There is a high demand for oranges to Europe due to the Northern Hemisphere that ended earlier this season. The strict EU health rules imposed on South Africa’s citrus industry, together with the revised estimate with a predicted decrease in volumes by 2.5 million cartons is not helping the situation. There is therefore a high demand globally for oranges from South Africa.

Market update

Continued increase in demand for South African oranges, as the last Egyptian Valencias are almost out of the market.

There is a decrease of 73% on orange volumes shipped from South Africa to the Middle East, compared to the same period last season.

Slight decrease in demand and price levels for South African late mandarins, due to more volumes of soft citrus varieties being shipped compared to last season.

The market is supplied with new season apples from Italy with varieties such as Evelina red apples, Granny Smith and Golden Delicious with high market price levels for the first apples from Italy. However, high prices levels are maintained for Royal Gala from South Africa and Chile, as only these countries remain in the market with Royal Gala apples and supply is limited.
