Growers are prioritizing Valencia/Midknight packing to the EU to fulfill programs and meet the EU duty deadline for last shipments from South Africa to the EU in week 37. However, this will depend on blackspot strikes, otherwise the last shipments from South Africa to the EU could be earlier than week 37.
The estimated Valencia crop is expected to be reduced even further, and the season is expected to end earlier than anticipated.

With South Africa’s Orange volumes being down and Spain that finished earlier this season with lower volumes due to the drought, this has left a gap in the market and good opportunity globally for Oranges from South Africa and Uruguay. However, Uruguay are also short on volumes due to the drought across large parts of South America.

Strong market in the GCC countries for South African Oranges with an increase in sales and price levels due to lower volumes from South Africa this season.
There is a decrease of 38% on Orange volumes shipped from South Africa to the Middle East, compared to the same period last season. With South Africa’s Orange volumes being down and Spain that finished earlier this season with lower volumes due to the drought, this has left a gap in the market.
Soft Citrus – increase of 15% on volumes shipped from South Africa to the Middle East, compared to the same period last season. The demand for Soft Citrus is currently lower compared to Oranges from South Africa due to the higher volumes shipped. However, there will be a window of opportunity with an increase in demand for shipping Late Mandarins (mid-end September) for arrival in October.

Local Apple crop delayed
The rains and storms have made the roads not accessible from the apples producing areas to the big cities. The early apples also have quality issues and are very scruffy. Imported fruit is still selling well. Consumption in general seems to be slowing down, which is a world wide phenomenon due to inflation.
