In General

Overall, the market remains slow across most commodity categories due to the current market conditions. Greater clarity is expected after 20 August, once schools reopen and local consumers return from vacation.

Valencias from Egypt are still available in the market, and there is currently no proper indication of when Egypt will exit the market.

Mandarins are currently available only from South Africa, with no competing origins in the market. Despite the lack of competition, movement remains slow, resulting in stock beginning to build up.

Locally sourced fruit continues to dominate the market. Competitively priced sweet melons, watermelons, grapes, and stone fruit from Jordan, Turkey, and Egypt .

Lemons

Lemon supplies continued to build as additional Southern Hemisphere arrivals entered Middle East markets. The combination of increased availability and low demand created a challenging week, with prices continuing to come under pressure across most size categories.

Oranges

Egyptian Valencia oranges continued to be available in the market, while South African Navel volumes increased further. The higher availability of South African fruit added to market competition, while demand remained relatively soft.

Pome

Apples are currently stable, with average market performance. South Africa is at the end of its Royal Gala apple season. Export volumes to the Middle East are currently 37% lower than during the same period last year.

The new-season Royal Gala crop from Italy is expected to start arriving towards the end of August and into early September.

Pear exports from South Africa have also declined significantly, with volumes down 50% year-on-year. Despite the reduced supply, demand remains lower as locally sourced summer fruit continues to dominate the market at competitive prices.
In addition to South African pears, the first Spanish pears, primarily the Ercolini variety, have now started to arrive in the market.
