Citrus fruit – South Africa

There have been delays with shipping the last Citrus fruit from Cape Town, due to Cape Town port being wind bound. South African Citrus growers have finished packing up North and only some Western Cape growers are still packing Valencia Orange for the next 1 – 2 weeks.

Market update

There is a decrease of 3% on Orange volumes shipped from South Africa to the Middle East, compared to the same period last season. There was a slight drop in the market demand and sales over the past few days for Valencia oranges. Cambria is still selling at high price levels.

Pome fruit

Some South African Pome fruit growers will still pack Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, Top Red, Packhams and Sundowners. The season is expected to end around week 49. Serbian Royal Gala are making arrival in the market, but Polish Royal Gala are still enroute. There is still a high demand for Royal Gala apples in the EU and UK markets, which is keeping the buying price high for other markets.

Market update

South African Pear prices remain stable, however, availability is limited and price levels are expected to increase from mid-October when Spanish pears are out of the market.

India / Bangladesh

Pear sales slow

Pear sales have slowed down although there are limited volumes in the market. Volumes of Valencias are reaching the market now and this is causing importers to sell below cost. SA citrus season is at the end and volumes shipped should reduce drastically as from next week.

Apples in full swing

Royal Gala Apples are still a highlight in the market. Golden Delicious are also performing well, but it depends on the quality and colour of the apples. Importers are losing money on Chinese and Indian apples. Demand for Northern Hemisphere apples have picked up.
