Market update

The first Golden Delicious from Italy has made arrival in Saudi Arabia. High volumes of Royal Gala from Italy/France continue to arrive in the Middle East market forcing price levels down.  This is due to limited storing of late season Royal gala from Italy /France due to the heatwave in Europe that affected the quality of the apples.

High volumes of Royal Gala apples being packed by Italy/France is being sent to the Middle East market.

            Grapes

The South African table grape industry expects an 8% drop in volumes for export in the 2023 season compared to the 2022 season. This is due to several factors such as a decrease in total hectares planted compared to full bearing hectares, logistical issues that can affect transit time to the market thus compromising quality, and the percentage of local packing and raisin production is expected to increase.

The Middle East market is supplied with grapes from Turkey, Greece, and Lebanon.

Stone Fruit

There was rain and thunderstorms in the Western Cape on Wednesday, and this could have affected the crop slightly depending on the area of the rainfall.

By the end of week 43, the first volume of apricots was airfreighted from South Africa to the Middle East. From South Africa, there was increase of 29% of peaches exported to the Middle East by both air and sea freight, however there was a decrease of 40% of nectarines exported to the Middle East compared to the same period last season.

Cherries

South Africa cherries enters the market just as the Canadian cherry season ends, giving South Africa that niche in supply and in the market, as it’s the only cherries harvested anywhere in the world during this period and for six weeks.

The Global cherry supply in the Southern Hemisphere is from mid-October to mid-February from South Africa, Argentina, Chile, Australia, and New Zealand. There is therefore a gap in supply in March and late-September and early October.  A lot of effort is being made to try and start cherries from the first half of October.
