Update on the GCC countries

The market remains stable overall, with sales and prices expected to rise for Egyptian navels as the season concludes. Prices for Egyptian and Turkish lemons are also anticipated to increase due to Ramadan. While the market for South African peaches will remain strong, the outlook for Rosemarie and Sempre pears is less optimistic, as increased volumes entering the market will likely limit price growth.

Citrus fruit – South Africa

Lemon packing has been delayed this week, due to heavy rainfall in the Northern regions. With rain expected to continue through the weekend, growers will not risk picking lemons.

Market update

The delay in packing South African lemons and the resulting supply gap are likely to drive up demand in the market. Market expectations suggest that price levels for Egyptian navels, as well as Egyptian and Turkish lemons, are expected to rise pre-Ramadan sales.

Pear exports from South Africa to the Middle East have decreased by 19% compared to the same period last season. While more volumes have been directed to Europe, the Middle East remains a close second in terms of shipments.

Only limited volumes of Royal Gala and other red varieties have been packed and shipped so far from the Grabouw and Ceres regions. However, the pace and volume are expected to increase in the coming weeks.

Market update

Demand and sales for apples continue to be sluggish, and prices have not risen despite a reduced supply from Europe. Italy attempted to raise prices on Royal Gala apples, but the market did not respond favourably and rejected the price increase.

The first shipments of Royal Gala apples from South Africa are expected to arrive in the Middle East market during the first week of March and during the start of Ramadan.

While prices for Rosemarie summer pears remain high, they have begun to decline over the past week as more volumes have entered the market. It is expected that prices will not rise in time for Ramadan.

Grape, Stone, Kiwi Fruit

Grapes -South Africa

The Hex River region is expected to finish harvesting white seedless grapes by the end of February. However, Red Globe and Crimson varieties should remain available for another 3 – 4 weeks, although Red Globe volumes will be limited.

Market update

Prices for South African grapes have decreased as more volume becomes available from both South Africa and India. However, there is expected to be a good window of opportunity for Red Globe grapes towards the end of the season, both from South Africa and later from Chile, as this variety will not be available from other countries. This opportunity will depend on the price, as South Africa is facing competition from India across all varieties in the market at lower price points.

Stone Fruit -South Africa

Middle East – Exported volumes from South Africa shipped to the Middle East have decreased by 13% for plums.

The latest estimate from South Africa indicates an increase in the production of the Angelino black plum variety compared to last season.

Market update

While prices for South African plums have decreased in the Middle East market, the performance of South African peaches remains strong.
