Grape, Stone & Kiwi Fruit

The South African Table Grape Industry (SATI) has reduced the crop estimate for the 2021 season after heavy rainfall at the beginning of the year in the key Orange River region.

The SATI expects the country’s intake volumes to be between 61.7 million and 67.1 million cartons down from 65 million and 69.8 million cartons initially indicated.  However, due to South Africa having five key table grape production areas it is expected that these other key areas will make up for the volumes lost.

Even though less grapes from South Africa has been shipped to the Middle East compared to the same period last season, there is a continued downward trend in price levels for white grapes from South Africa in the GCC countries with limited demand. South Africa is competing with Grapes from India that has started to make arrival in the market.

Middle East – decrease of 40% on cumulative volumes shipped to date from compared to 2020 season.

Next week (week 3) will be a slow packing week on plums and this is contributed to forecasted rain in the area over the week-end followed by high temperatures as well as the tail-end of the fortune variety of Red plums which was already 62% down by the end of week 1 compared to the same period last season. This will result in a gap in supply as the Laeticia variety of Red plums is only expected to be packed 1 week later (week 4) at the end of February/beginning of March.

Peaches to Middle East – decrease of 3%  on cumulative volumes shipped to date compared  to 2020 season.

Nectarines to Middle East – decrease of 38% on cumulative volumes shipped to date compared to 2020 season.

Plums to Middle East – decrease of 45% on cumulative volumes shipped to date compared to 2020 season.

Apricots to Middle East – increase of 137% on cumulative volumes shipped to date compared to 2020 season.
