Pome

Last year saw a better winter with enough rain together with cooler weather during the spring that resulted in a good crop forecast for 2021 season. The season will be about 7-10 days late. An increase of 4% on apples (37 million 12.5kg cartons) and 2% (17 million 12.5kg cartons) on pears is expected for the season. The damage caused by severe hail/rain in the Langkloof area, mid-January, is said to have caused the loss of 4 million cartons from the region.

India / Bangladesh

India

India is still struggling with consumer spend and the wholesale markets are not back to where they were before Covid. Hotels are only 15% full and only 50 people allowed at weddings and funerals, thus causing catering to totally collapse.

European supply of Gala Apples has slowed down completely and this has caused prices to pick up as there is a shortage in the market. There is still uncertainty about the implementation of the NON GMO protocol for Plums and Apples that comes into effect from 1 March 2021.

Bangladesh

In amongst the widespread commotion brought about by the current elections, the market is boding well for all apples from varying origins.

Citrus has not fared well for some time now and is not expected to regain it’s competitive edge anytime soon, with losses being made in the market across a very cosmopolitan range of orange and mandarin varieties.

These losses are due to high volume supply and availability of product originating from India, Bhutan, China and Egypt – with South African product still available from the tail-end of the ZA citrus season.

At time of going to press, Bangladesh are currently showing a very high win probably, needing 48 runs in 27.4 overs to secure their win over the West Indies
