Citrus growers stopped picking/packing from Friday 6th August to 12th August as suggested by CGA (Citrus Growers Association) to help alleviate the congestion in Durban port and cold stores.  This has helped to alleviate the congestion at the port and cold stores.  TPT (Transnet Port Terminals) are now resourced to start handling volumes of citrus across its network of Port terminals again.

Slight increase in price levels for South African valencias in the GCC countries due to the tail-end of Eygptian valencias and lower volumes of South African valencias shipped to the market. On-going poor market conditions with slow sales rate and price levels for South African soft citrus varieties in the GCC countries.

Increase in demand and price levels for Lemons, Grapefruit, and pears from South Africa due to limited availability and supply from South Africa.

New-season apples from the Northern Hemisphere to start sooner than anticipated…… mid-Augusts and not the 01st September as anticipated.

Citrus – South Africa

Valencia’s colour development was very good, due to the season start being delayed. Current Valencia varieties being packed include Midknight, Bennies and Gusocora. Northern Growers will finish packing in week 35/36. Next week is the last week, the Eastern areas of South Africa will pack Cambria Late Navels. The Western Cape growers will start picking Valencia varieties around week 36.

The Northern and Western areas in South Africa are picking and packing Nadorcott/Tango soft citrus. Currently, Nadorcott soft citrus seems to be peak between count 1X – 1.

In general, poor market conditions for soft citrus varieties are due to the high volume in the market from South Africa. The arrival of Argentinian soft citrus is adding to the market pressure.

Mandarins – Peru: Peru is currently in its late mandarin season and the season is expected to end in September/October. Late mandarin varieties include Murcott’s, Nadorcott’s, and Malvaceo.

Market update: The new apple season from the Northern Hemisphere is earlier than anticipated and they will start harvesting in mid-August and not the 01st September. Market price levels are high, however, South Africa still has some suppliers/growers with late Royal Gala/Gala apples but this will be too late to send to the GCC countries as it will compete with apples from France, Italy, and Spain.

The continued increase in demand and price levels in the GCC countries for Forelle/Vermont pears from South Africa due to the limited supply. Limited volume is available for that have been stored for shipments until the end of September.

New-season for Spanish pears has started to make an arrival in the GCC countries.

India / Bangladesh

India

Apples from Turkey are already en route to India and this is causing prices of current imported apple prices to drop. Packhams still selling at losses. Vermont pears doing well. The citrus market is currently stable.

Bangladesh

Bangladesh has seen some very satisfactory improvements in both sales tempo and price levels on the market.

South African Goldens are in demand as always, oranges are showing good returns and even soft citrus is showing good signs of recovery, however, the oversupply of “weaker” varieties continues to cause headaches.
