Due to limited shipping opportunities out of Durban port, this week has resulted in an increase in cold store capacity. Last week (week 33) has seen a record 4.8 million cartons of citrus being produced in the northern regions of South Africa resulting in high volumes of truckloads arriving at Durban port contributing to the congestion.

The market is becoming stronger for valencias from South Africa and this is because Egypt is finished with oranges for the season. On-going poor market conditions with slow sales rates and price levels for South African soft citrus varieties in the GCC countries.

Increase in demand and price levels for Lemons, Grapefruit, and pears from South Africa due to limited availability and supply from South Africa.

New-season apples from the Northern Hemisphere have started.

Valencia’s colour development was very good, due to the season start being delayed. Current Valencia varieties being packed include Midknight, Gusocora, and Valencia Lates. Northern Growers will finish packing in week 38/39. The Western Cape growers will start picking Valencia varieties around week 36.

The Western areas in South Africa are picking and packing Nadorcott/Tango soft citrus. Currently, Nadorcott soft citrus seems to be peak between count 1X – 1.

Market update:

The market is becoming stronger for valencias from South Africa as a result of the end of the Egyptian season for oranges. Increased demand and price levels for Navelates from South Africa.

In general, poor market conditions for soft citrus varieties are due to the high volume in the market from South Africa. The arrival of Argentinian soft citrus is adding to the market pressure.

Increase in demand and price levels for both lemons and late star ruby grapefruit from South Africa with limited availability.

Mandarins – Peru: Peru is currently in its late mandarin season and the season is expected to end in September/October. Late mandarin varieties include Murcott’s, Nadorcott’s, and Malvaceo.

The continued increase in demand and price levels in the GCC countries for Forelle/Vermont pears from South Africa due to the limited supply. Limited volume is available for CA pears that have been stored for shipments until the end of September.

New-season for Spanish pears has started to make an arrival in the GCC countries.

Italy expects their new apple crop to be 4% smaller and one week later than last year,  but with an increase/boost in organic production. The Italian apple harvest got underway in mid-August with the start of picking of Gala apples.

India / Bangladesh

India

This is the first season that India has their own Royal Gala Apples. This has slowed down the sale of imported Royal Gala Apples with a lot of stock sitting in cold stores. Turkish new season apples are also en route. Packham pears are still showing only limited sales. Vermont and Forelle are still doing well. The demand for oranges has increased.

Bangladesh

All is certainly seeming somewhat rosier for the market in Bangladesh these days.

Oranges are commanding very admirable returns, and grapes are certainly a winner too.

Soft citrus saw some improvement last week, however, apple prices seem to be trending downward.
