Shipped YTD

Apples from RSA to the Middle East – an increase of 33% on cumulative volumes shipped to date compared to the 2020 season.

Pears from RSA to the Middle East –  an increase of 1% on cumulative volumes shipped to date compared to the 2020 season.

Market update:

The new apple season from the Northern Hemisphere has started. There are still apples from South Africa in the market and this is due to much later shipping from South Africa into the market compared to last season. For this reason, the United Arab Emirates has no apples from Greece, Italy, or Spain in the market as yet.

The continued increase in demand and price levels in the GCC countries for Forelle/Vermont pears from South Africa due to the limited supply. Limited volume is available for CA pears that have been stored for shipments until the end of September. South Africa will have limited volume available for the next 2 weeks.

Spanish pears are available in the market and Syria will also be a competitor this season with the availability of pears at low price levels. Belgium has started its new harvest of pears.

In General

Italy expects their new apple crop to be 4% smaller and one week later than last year.

Poland has started shipping Royal Gala this week.

Grape, Stone & Kiwi Fruit

Stone fruit – South Africa – short update for the new season

Cold weather in the Western Cape is causing havoc with the new season crop. Fruit is going to be late, size small.  Similar crop on all commodities as last season, therefore, high volumes of Plums will be available again for the new season.

India / Bangladesh

India

The increased freight rates from around the world may benefit RSA Apple’s supply to India. India pays import duties on the C&F value of the fruit. Increased freight rates from South America and the USA could make them uncompetitive when compared to SA. This could be good for the RSA apple crop in 2022.

Vermont/Forelle pears still doing well. Apples moving slowly. Some Indian importers are sending their SA oranges into Bangladesh when the market is short.

Bangladesh

Market sales are going well and at profitable price levels.

Limited shipping options from South Africa continue to throttle the volume, however stock en route is increasing with the recent improvement in capacity.

Mandarin price levels have improved and orange pricing has returned to more sustainable levels.
