Update on the market in the GCC countries

There is a general concern this week, that price levels will drop with the influx of volumes of Valencias shipped to the Middle East over the past 3 weeks from South Africa. However, volumes will decrease going forward as South Africa is at the end of their citrus season, and this can help to hold prices at the current higher levels. Decrease in apple prices as higher volumes from all origins make arrival in the market. The price for South African pears is expected to increase from mid-October when Spanish pears are almost out of the market.

The Eastern and Western Cape are wrapping up the season on late mandarins . Europe, UK, and the Middle East were dominant markets for South African Mandarins this season.  The Northern regions have finished packing Valencia. The Western Cape should have 1 week left of packing and then the citrus season for South Africa will be finished.

Market update

The Middle East market is concerned about the higher volumes of Valencias that have been shipped from South Africa over the last 3 weeks. However, with South Africa ending sooner than anticipated in week 40/41, the market will not be oversupplied, as there will be no oranges until Egypt is only expected to start making arrival in the GCC countries at the beginning of December.

With large volumes coming in the Valencia prices are dropping daily. More volumes enroute will drop prices below cost. The early end to the citrus from South Africa should help prices to increase in future.
