Update on the market in the GCC countries

The GCC countries are not performing well on all commodities except for Bananas, Cambria, Red apples from the USA, and Green apples from France/Italy.

In Dubai, there has been an increase in the price of Nadorcotts from South Africa and this is also due to the limited volume from Spain.  However, the Kinnow mandarin should arrive from Pakistan in the next 3 weeks with high volumes per week and then South Africa will need to be out of the market.

Market update

Egypt has changed the official date for the start of the new Egyptian crop on navels to be exported from the 1st week of December. This is much better for the late-season valencias that are still in the GCC countries from South Africa as the market is already under pressure with price levels that are continuously declining. South Africa can’t afford to compete with Egyptian navels in the market.

Only Cambria oranges are performing well in the GCC countries with high price levels especially for size 72, however, volume is very limited as this variety ended a few weeks ago from South Africa.

Market update

Continued high price levels for red apples from the USA as well as Granny Smith and Golden Delicious varieties from France/Italy.  However, price levels continue to drop for Royal Gala apples as more volume arrives from many other countries in the market. The market is supplied with new season Royal Gala apples from France, Italy, Poland, Ukraine, Portugal, Turkey, Serbia, and New Zealand.

The late-season Forelle/Vermont pears are finished in South Africa and only Packham pears are available for the next 2 weeks from South Africa. The continued increase in price levels for pears from Spain and South Africa in the GCC countries is due to low volumes in the market.

Grape, Stone & Kiwi Fruit

Update on Stone fruit from South Africa

Some peach varieties are at the tail-end and therefore there is a gap in supply as the next variety only starts up in 1-2 weeks. Volumes are still low on nectarines,  and this can also be contributed to the gaps in supply because of the cool weather that we are experiencing in the Western Cape.

For the new season, there is an expected increase of 10% on nectarines to 7.1 million cartons (2.5kg equivalent).  The plum estimate has been adjusted to 15.7 million cartons (2.5kg equivalent) and this is an increase of 3% compared to last season. Apricot volumes are expected to be the same as last season, while peach volumes are expected to be 3% down compared to last season.

Update on Grapes from South Africa

South Africa has exported about 15 containers of the early season grapes to the UK and Europe and predominantly the Early Sweet white seedless variety.

No report.

Bangladesh

Nothing exciting to report at this stage. The market is currently slow and most commodities selling at cost or below.

Red apples, previously the better performing product in the market, also appear to have lost ground, seeing a small decline in price levels.
