South African Ports

In Cape Town port, FPT (South African private terminal) has acquired another reach stacker. This new equipment is less sensitive to wind, and this will assist with the exports of grapes and stone fruit this season, when there is a lot of wind during the summer period.   Durban Port is congested with 62 vessels waiting to berth. This is negatively effecting Mango exports, as Durban port will not be a viable alternative  option to consider on a weekly basis.

Royal Gala apples in Italy might finish 1 month earlier, and Spain will also finish earlier.  However, volumes could be stored for later. After the elections in Poland , the ROE (Polish Zloty vs USD) went up by 4 – 5% and the price in Italy also went up by 5% after the Euro/dollar price change. Growers are adamant that price levels must increase, and if markets around the globe don’t pay the higher price, growers will store the fruit to maintain the higher price level later in the season. Granny Smith apples in Italy is estimated to be 40 – 50% down this season.
