Due to a surge in the number of Covid-19 cases in Bahrain, the Government has closed all schools, restaurants, social gatherings and cafes  for a   period of 3 weeks, however retail/wholesale stores and commercial outlets will remain open. Saudi Arabia has followed suit by closing restaurants for a period of 10 day and events/parties have been suspended for a month.  The markets operating in Saudi Arabia  remain open for the most part, however there are some markets that are closed.  Saudi Arabia have also imposed a travel ban from 20 countries including the UAE, UK and USA to try and curb the rise of  Covid-19 infections.

Pome

In the Western Cape, the  summer pear varieties will continue until the end of February/beginning of March, while the first Winter pears (Forelle/Vermont Beaut) is expected to be  packed from mid-March (week 10) onwards.

Middle East – decrease of 88% on cumulative pear volumes shipped to date from South Africa compared to the 2020 season. This can be contributed  to the season being 5-10 days later.

Grape, Stone & Kiwi Fruit

Grapes

There has only been an increase in the market demand and price levels for White grapes in Saudi Arabia.  This is mainly due to low volumes currently available in the market, however there are white grapes on-route from India to Saudi Arabia.

South Africa is at the tail-end of the white grape season with limited volumes still available.

With last week’s heavy rain and hail in certain areas of Chile  it is estimated that 53% of the mid-season table grape varieties have been damaged .  The white grapes are currently in production and this has decreased the volumes significantly.

Stone fruit
In general, there has been an increase in demand for all commodities in Saudi Arabia for the past 2 days including Stone fruit varieties.  This can be contributed to a ban/lockdown in Saudi Arabia following the announcement by the Government  on the 03rd February and commencing on the 04th February to try and curb the rise in Covid-19 infections.

India / Bangladesh

India

FSSAI are still adamant that they require a NON-GMO certificate for each shipment of plums and apples from all countries. This must also be in their format and is applicable from 1 March 2021. Most countries are struggling to comply with this. This could create good opportunities for countries that can comply. Apple market is still good and the pear market is picking up slowly. Plum and grape market still sluggish. Egyptian Valencia’s market prices are dropping weekly as volumes start to pick up.

Bangladesh

Oranges and mandarin continue with very weak performance in the market, along with grapes supplied from India.

Apples have joined the poor-performers with declining price levels following their recent leading status. Pears appear to be the current favourite among marketers, as sales and prices hold their ground.
