The last big shipment to Europe was loaded last week (week 38) to meet the European duty deadline on 15 October and the last conventional vessel was loaded for the USA. More focus will be on the Middle East Market for the tail end of the Valencia season.

China is also under pressure as its local fruit supply is available now.
For this reason, the focus will be on sending the late-season Valencias from South Africa to the Middle East market and not to Europe, America, and China. The higher volume being sent to the Middle East over the next few weeks is concerning as the market will come under pressure.

Bangladesh would normally be another market for more volumes of late valencias but with port strikes in Chittagong, this is not really a viable option.

1.00 USD = 3.67 AED (Emirate Dirham)
1.00 USD = 3.75 SAD (Saudi Riyals)
1.00 USD = 85.62 BDT (Bangladeshi Taka)
1.00 USD = 74.11 INR (Indian Rupees)

Citrus

Citrus – South Africa

Current Valencia varieties being packed include Midknight and Valencia Lates. The Western Cape growers will finish picking Valencia varieties around week 42.

The Western areas in South Africa are finishing packing Nadorcott soft citrus.

Soft Citrus to the Middle East – an increase of 66% on cumulative volumes shipped to date compared to the 2020 season.

Market update:

Although the market is becoming stronger for valencias from South Africa, prices levels are not exceptional. However, there is a higher demand for size 64/72 and customers are paying a higher price for these sizes. There are concerns however that the market will become under pressure in the coming weeks with high volumes of late valencias being re-directed from Europe, America, and China to the Middle East market.

There has been a slight demand for the late Nadorcotts from South Africa, however, this variety is not available as packing has just finished in South Africa.

The new season for Turkish lemons has started making an arrival in the United Arab Emirates.  Turkey will have a big lemon crop this season.

Market update:

New-season for French apples and Italy has started making an arrival in the Dubai market.

The continued increase in demand and price levels in the GCC countries for Forelle/Vermont pears from South Africa due to the limited supply. Limited volume is available for CA pears that have been stored for shipments until the end of September. South Africa will have limited volume available for the next 1-2 weeks.

In General

Polish apples are doing well, and this can be contributed to the good quality of the Royal gala apples this season with high colour due to the favourable weather conditions.

Grape, Stone & Kiwi Fruit

Stone fruit/Grapes

There will be a larger stone fruit and Grape crop this season and with the shipping delays and equipment issues out of South Africa, there are concerns about the logistics for grapes and stone fruit this season. The fruit needs to be packed and shipped soonest due to the shorter shelf life of these commodities.

In general

Peru has a large grape crop this season.

India / Bangladesh

India

The demand for citrus is dropping, but prices are holding. Prices could drop in the next week or two as more SA citrus arrives in a market where demand is dropping. Vermont/Forelle still doing well.

Bangladesh

Mandarin prices have dropped significantly within the last week of trading on the market, whilst oranges are still in high demand with very limited availability.

The requirement for Valencia is undeniably strong, considering the throttled supply through logistical challenges, coupled with the “new norm” daily requirements for Vitamin C since the onset of the pandemic.

The Dengue virus has added fuel to the fire this year, by hanging around well past its “bedtime” due to the extended rainy season.
