Market update

The last of the late-season valencias are still in the market from South Africa and this can be contributed to vessel delays and slow sales rates.

The first arrivals of the Egyptian oranges in the GCC countries have begun.

Grape, Stone & Kiwi Fruit

Update on Stone fruit and a market update in the GCC countries

Due to the rain in the Western Cape, there has been a 15-20% loss in the volume of Nectarines and Apricots.  There is also a gap in the supply of plums between the early season varieties and the mid-season varieties.

Update on Grapes

The first crop estimate for the 2022 South African table grape season is expected to be between 70.6 – 77.7 million cartons.  This will be the third season that South Africa has had growth in the table grape industry. The crop is between 7-10 days later due to the rain and most of the growers in the Northern Cape will start packing volumes from week 48/49 (beginning – mid-December).

Although the first white Seedless grapes from India have started to make its arrival in Dubai, grapes from South Africa, Brazil and Italy are still doing well. The first South African grapes have just started to make its arrival in the GCC countries.  The South of India is experiencing heavy rains and at this stage, it is not known to what extent the damage is to the table grape crop. The GCC countries are currently also supplied with grapes from Italy, America, Turkey, and Egypt although Italy is at the tail-end of the season.

India / Bangladesh

India

No report.

Bangladesh

Little to no improvement on South African oranges, since the quality of late-season produce leaves much to be desired, with most sales taking place over the auction.

Indian orange prices are high, due to reduced supply as a result of the low crop this season.

South African Goldens are still in good demand, although recent rains have affected the market activity.

There are hopes of a turnaround here, however, with the inclement weather has subsided.
